Teaching Math

It's no secret that I'm fairly lax with our homeschool routine. Within a very short amount of time, I learned that following the interests of my children and allowing for lots of creative play, both indoors and out, has led to the greatest discoveries . In the beginning of our journey, I tried to conduct our school at home in a scheduled and strict method. It was awful. Every day was a battle, and truth be told it was dull for everyone. Now, I wasn't totally comfortable in doing no book work, but with all of the resources out there, it wasn't difficult to find things that my children enjoyed, but also taught them skills that I feel are important.

One of the most recent things I stumbled upon is a DVD called Times Tales. The makers of the DVD advertise that children will learn the multiplication facts from 3-9 in a short amount of time, just by watching the DVD (two parts, 30 minutes each), and by supplementing with the printable materials on the second DVD that comes as part of the set. It's pure memory work. Now I don't know about you, but I learned my math facts by doing flashcards and worksheets. Totally fine and effective, but what if it could actually be fun too?

What if? Alright truth be told I didn't completely buy into the spiel. If this tool is so effective, why isn't it being utilized widely? Short answer; I have no idea but it delivers as promised. As of today, my two school aged children, ages 8 and 6, have watched the DVD a total of 3 times and know all of the multiplication facts from 3-9. We have not yet utilized the printable, but they look fun as well. The short stories on Times Tales are simple to recall and incorporate all of the parts of the multiplication problem. While this isn't a full curriculum and should certainly be supplemented with concrete knowledge of what it means to multiply, it's a wonderful and fun addition to any classroom.
